PEI's Casual Dating Scene
PEI is small and everyone on it knows that, which shapes the casual dating scene in ways that are both a challenge and an advantage. The challenge is obvious — it's a small island, people know each other, and discretion matters more here than in a city where you can disappear into the crowd. The advantage is that the people who are putting themselves out there have thought about it and mean it. There's very little casual flaking or ghosting culture on PEI because everyone's accountable in ways that city people simply aren't.
Charlottetown is where most of the action concentrates. UPEI brings in a steady flow of people from off-island, which keeps things from getting too incestuous, and the downtown bar scene is active enough for a city its size. The mix of island-born people and come-from-aways (CFAs as the locals call them) is actually interesting — the CFAs often bring a more urban sensibility about casual dating that the local scene absorbs and adapts to over time.
Summerside is more straightforward and less self-conscious about it. Discretion is even more valued there given the smaller social radius, but once you've established that you're both on the same page, things tend to move without a lot of deliberation. The Island generally selects for people who've made a specific choice about where they want to live, and that intentionality extends to other choices too.
